Slower ships and busy trains equal less pollution

May 18, 2010

In the latest installment of the Port’s award winning “Pulse of the Port” video program, we visit a beehive of steel boxes at the Union Pacific’s Intermodal Container Transfer Facility or ICTF.

The 233-acre facility in North Long Beach is a transfer point for millions of trade containers every year between the Port of Long Beach and points east.

Using a train to transport containers to and from cities like Dallas and Memphis is the equivalent of removing 280 diesel trucks off the road, reducing congestion and pollution, which brings us to the other segments in the episode.

- Learn how the Port is pushing the envelope with its milestone Clean Air Action Plan, or CAAP, by setting pollution goals all the way out to 2023.

- "The Green Flag Program" is part of CAAP and gives incentives to vessel operators to slow their ships within the harbor to reduce pollution. See which companies really shined last year.

- And for some historical perspective meet Mario Cordero, the longest serving member of the Harbor Board of Commissioners, and an early champion of CAAP and the Clean Trucks Program.

Watch individual segments on the Port's YouTube channel or catch the entire show on Long Beach Television Channel 8 Mondays at 7:30 p.m. and 11 p.m., Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at noon. Verizon subscribers can catch the program on Channel 21.
